Overview

Enhancing a popular riding destination with improved public space and amenities.

The Sugar Bag Road Mountain Bike Trail, located on the Sunshine Coast and known as ‘Caloundra’s Playground’, is a popular riding network. As part of the staged master plan for the site developed by Sunshine Coast Council and Caloundra Off Road Cycling Association (CORCA), we delivered a compact precinct that enhanced the well-loved site with a cafe, bike hire facility and amenities.

Despite its small footprint, this project significantly enhances the area by providing a mix of facilities and outdoor engagement. The hub, connected by concrete paths, is inclusive and DDA-compliant, set to draw more visitors and support larger events.

We experienced high levels of wet weather throughout construction, particularly during the earthworks and concrete paving works. To avoid delays, our team adjusted the staging of works to allow for structural items to be built whilst weather delayed other areas of the program. COVID-19 impacted the supply chain lead times for certain specified materials, including the feature screens and stainless steel downpipes. Working closely with our architect, we were able to substitute some of these finishes for items with better availability.
