Overview
A dynamic new home for a historic tennis club.
Balwyn Park Tennis Club has existed on Cherry Road since 1926. Well loved by its community, BPTC has always been a proud organisation with many ties to surrounding associations and welcoming of non-members. For example, the courts were regularly used by Fintona Girl’s School.
In 2014, with a view to enhance the facilities in the local area as part of the concept plan for the Boroondara Park precinct, Council presented the club with two options for expansion. With Option 2 selected as the optimal choice, BPTC relocated from its 87-year home into a new purpose-built facility nearby.
The new Balwyn Park Community and Tennis Club continues to cater to sports users, competition-based purposes, and a mosaic of community groups.
The club pavilion thoughtfully adapts to sloping terrain, offering a 'front door' on each level. It hosts a range of functions, including a clubroom, versatile spaces for teaching and learning, a commercial kitchen, office areas, casual meeting points, and trophy and display cabinets.
We demolished the original lawn bowl clubrooms and greens to make way for a new multi-level pavilion flanked by four new modern tennis courts, the existing football oval and a designated parking area.
The simple structure gains character by its brick walls, constructed in a Flemish bond, with headers protruding to create an interesting textured appearance. Its appeal is further enhanced by its robust and elegantly balanced dynamic Aramax roof. This roofing technology enables expansive spans with no need for purlins or girts, reducing the number of intermediate steel supports. We formed the roof sheeting directly on-site, carefully placing each sheet using a crane. This intricate process required precise coordination, as the specialised machine needed to be reserved six months in advance (the only one available in Australia).
A central staircase connects both levels, enhanced with seating and a court-inspired enclosure. While the brickwork dominates the exterior, the interior spaces come alive with vibrant color accents.
