Overview

Elevated care for man’s best friend. Compassionate design and sustainable construction merge to create a benchmark
animal welfare project.

Our redevelopment of RSPCA Burwood East set a global benchmark for animal care as the world’s first enclosed, naturally ventilated, day-lit facility.

The project remedied the inadequacies of the outdated existing facility, where single-storey, open-air kennels exposed dogs and visitors to the elements and subjected nearby residents to incessant barking. The redevelopment enhanced capacity and comfort with five enclosed, two-storey wings housing 200 quarantine dog kennels with integrated eco-friendly and energy-efficient technologies.

Our program started with Wing 1, which became the prototype for subsequent wings. This streamlined the project and enabled swift adaptations for Wings 2-5. Sequential construction from Wing 1 to 5 ensured optimal crane and truck access, avoiding the spatial constraints we would have faced by reversing the order. A dog-friendly ramp provides access to each wing, offering a cost-effective and intuitively efficient layout.

We introduced an eco-conscious cooling solution and optimised hydronic heating for the 200 kennels, overcoming initial challenges of space, piping, and heat loss by situating heating manifolds in ceiling spaces for efficiency and material conservation. Pre-screed installation of heating coils within kennels underpinned the structural integrity, ensuring meticulously angled screeds for superior drainage, vital for hygiene and moisture control.

The kennels have passive ventilation flues for odour and heat removal. Front-facing air inlets ensure clean air circulation, minimising germ and odour transmission. Flues are painted black to boost solar gain and convective airflow, while Venturi caps and wind scoops utilise wind power for air renewal. Additionally, we implemented acoustic treatments along ventilation paths and within each kennel using double-glazing, ensuring a comfortable environment conducive to the well-being of both staff and dogs.

Material selection was key in this project to combat corrosion from dog urine and frequent cleaning. Stainless steel was used for key fixtures and Colorbond cladding for shower linings. Steel grilles were engineered to enhance airflow and prevent dog escapes or injuries. In kennel construction, PVC moulds were used instead of traditional joints to combat structural and moisture problems.

The kennels overlook the landscaped courtyard, thoughtfully constructed to enrich the dogs’ exercise experience. Winding paths, varied gravel, and native plants create a dynamic, sensory environment, deterring boredom and preventing antisocial behaviour.

Through the successful redevelopment of the Burwood East facility, the RSPCA can better serve the dogs in their care, attract more people to visit, boost animal adoption rates, and impart knowledge to guide informed adoption decisions.
